When you look at a balance sheet, every number on the balance sheet should correspond to something in the real world. If you balance sheet says your accounts receivable is $100K, then out in the real world your customers should owe you exactly $100K. If inventory is $150K on your balance sheet, that's how much inventory you should have in your warehouse.
If your balance sheet doesn't correspond to the real world of your business, it is time to tell your bookkeeper to take a long walk off a short plank.
